About the Dis-Chem Security Guard Job
The Dis-Chem Security Guard will provide professional security services to protect company assets, property, employees and customers.
The role involves identifying and responding to suspicious activities, controlling access to the premises, conducting searches and patrols, monitoring security systems and responding appropriately to emergencies.
Candidates must be alert, trustworthy and able to remain calm and decisive during potentially dangerous situations.
Minimum Requirements
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12, Matric or Senior Certificate.
- Grade C PSIRA accreditation.
- PSIRA registration.
- At least 3 years of general exposure in the retail industry, such as shopping malls or warehouses.
- Good English reading, writing and speaking skills.
- Knowledge of PSIRA requirements.
- Fire emergency and relevant Health and Safety training or exposure.
Advantageous Requirements
- At least one year of previous experience in a similar security role.
- Ability to speak a third language.
Security Guard Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for protecting Dis-Chem’s premises, staff, customers and assets.
Key duties include:
- Remain vigilant and alert to identify suspicious activities.
- Respond appropriately to criminal activity and security violations within legal authority.
- Conduct regular patrols of the premises.
- Monitor and control pedestrian and vehicle access points.
- Verify that individuals entering the premises have appropriate authorisation.
- Investigate and report signs of damage or unlawful entry.
- Maintain a visible security presence to deter theft, damage and criminal activity.
- Provide professional and courteous customer service to staff, customers and visitors.
- Conduct access-control searches of staff, suppliers and company merchandisers.
- Maintain registers and occurrence books accurately.
- Cancel staff purchases and record declared goods where required.
- Supervise refuse removal according to Dis-Chem procedures.
- Protect company property and assets against theft, dishonesty and malicious behaviour.
- Remain at the assigned security post while on duty.
- Report unusual or suspicious behaviour by employees, customers or suppliers.
- Follow site opening and closing procedures.
- Check that doors and windows are secured at the end of the day.
- Ensure water taps are turned off where applicable.
- Conduct personnel frisking and searches.

- Monitor changing conditions after incidents and report developments to management.
Emergency and Crisis Response
The Dis-Chem Security Guard must be prepared to respond quickly and correctly during emergencies.

- Report incidents to management, police or relevant emergency authorities.
- Provide detailed written reports after incidents.
- Monitor alarm systems and CCTV/video cameras.
- Operate emergency and detection equipment when required.

- Enforce applicable security rules and regulations.
Additional Duties
The Security Guard may also be required to:
- Receive departmental phone calls.
- Respond to relevant text messages and emails.
- Perform essential departmental errands.
- Carry out special security duties according to Dis-Chem procedures.
