Dis-Chem Dispensary Support – Optenhorst

Dis-Chem Dispensary Support at Optenhorst is an entry-level contract opportunity in Paarl North, Western Cape. The role supports the learner basic pharmacist assistant course and offers practical exposure to a pharmacy environment. Applications close on 4 November 2026.

Dis-Chem Dispensary Support requirements

You need Matric or a Senior Certificate, with Pure Mathematics at 50%, plus Life Science and/or Physical Science and at least a 50% average as specified in the advert. Check your actual subject results carefully; holding Matric alone does not establish that you meet the requirements.

You must be a South African citizen and meet the employer’s proficiency-test, MIE, clear criminal-record and credit conditions. The language requirement covers reading, writing and speaking English and a second language. Computer and numerical skills, careful time management and clear communication are also important.

Retail FMCG or Dis-Chem front-shop experience is advantageous. The advert labels the vacancy entry level, but applicants should still demonstrate the stated competencies. Avoid describing experience or qualifications you do not hold.

Training, registration and work

The initial Dispensary Support appointment is fixed term until registration with the South African Pharmacy Council as a learner basic assistant. A proficiency test assesses readiness for that registration. The employer states that permanent employment is offered only once the learner qualifies as a basic pharmacist assistant.

Registered learner basic assistants work under a pharmacist’s direct personal supervision. The advertised tasks include supporting medicine preparation, packing and labelling, keeping shelves clean, checking stock and expiry dates, and helping with patient follow-up. Medicines must be checked and signed by a pharmacist.

This is a role requiring accuracy, honesty and professional conduct. When preparing your application, use examples that show you can follow instructions, organise tasks and handle customer queries responsibly. School projects, previous work or other relevant activities can help you explain those skills without claiming pharmacy experience.
