The successful candidate will support cleaning, housekeeping, waste management and general site safety across sugar cane logistics operations. This role involves working around heavy equipment, vehicles, workshops, loading areas and other high-traffic operational environments.

About the Job

The General Worker will help maintain clean, hygienic and safe working conditions across operational areas. The role includes removing debris, cane residue, mud and spills while keeping workplaces, walkways and equipment areas clean and free from hazards.

The successful candidate must be comfortable working outdoors and indoors and around trucks, tractors, cane loaders and mechanical harvesters.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Grade 10–12, with Grade 12 preferred.
  • 1–2 years’ cleaning experience in an industrial, agricultural or logistics environment.
  • Experience working near heavy equipment or in busy operational areas will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and industrial waste handling.
  • Basic cleaning or safety training will be an advantage.
  • Ability to use cleaning tools and light equipment.
  • Understanding of workplace safety when working around machinery.
  • Ability to identify and report hazards.

Key Responsibilities

Cleaning and Housekeeping

  • Clean loading zones, workshops, offices and ablution facilities.
  • Remove cane residue, mud, dust, leaves, oil spills and other debris.
  • Clean workshop floors, benches, tools and storage areas.
  • Keep walkways, ramps and access points clear.
  • Maintain cleanliness around fuel stations, wash bays, parking areas and yards.

Waste Management

  • Collect and dispose of waste according to site procedures.
  • Empty bins and replace liners.
  • Transport waste to designated disposal areas.
  • Assist with recycling and correct disposal of contaminated materials.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow company safety policies and PPE requirements.
  • Keep floors and pathways dry and free of hazards.
  • Identify and report spills, broken glass, damaged surfaces and unsafe conditions.
  • Use warning signs when cleaning wet areas.
  • Handle and store cleaning chemicals safely.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Communicate cleaning priorities with the Supervisor.
  • Work safely around workshop technicians, drivers and machine operators.
  • Report shortages of cleaning materials and faulty equipment.
  • Participate in daily safety and operational briefings.

Equipment and Reporting

  • Use brooms, mops, pressure washers, vacuums and industrial brushes correctly.
  • Maintain cleaning equipment and report faults.
  • Keep cleaning storage areas organised.
  • Complete daily cleaning checklists and housekeeping records.
  • Report spills, hazards and incidents immediately.

Working Conditions

This position may involve:

  • Indoor and outdoor work.
  • Exposure to dust, mud, cane debris and noise.
  • Working near moving trucks, tractors and heavy machinery.
  • Wearing PPE such as safety boots, gloves and reflective vests.
  • Bending, lifting, standing for long periods and walking on uneven ground.
  • Working shifts, weekends, public holidays and during peak harvest periods.
