Bus Drivers Job Overview

Robben Island Museum is recruiting 6 Bus Drivers for 6-month contract positions within the Visitor Operations Department.

The successful candidates will be responsible for transporting visitors and residents safely to and from the prison and other locations around Robben Island. Drivers must be willing to work shifts and sleep over on the island when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transport visitors according to planned routes and schedules.
  • Drive safely and comply with the National Road Traffic Act and regulations.
  • Ensure the safety of passengers when loading, unloading and transporting them.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections.
  • Check fuel, water, oil and the general mechanical condition of the bus before use.
  • Maintain accurate logbooks and operational records.
  • Compile simple reports when required.
  • Report vehicle defects and mechanical problems to the Unit Manager.
  • Follow vehicle maintenance schedules and instructions.
  • Report delays, accidents and other incidents.
  • Assist elderly and disabled passengers when boarding and leaving the bus.
  • Ensure passengers are seated safely.
  • Communicate expected delays to passengers.
  • Check and operate wheelchair ramps when required.

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 10 qualification.
  • Matric will be an added advantage.
  • At least 3 years of verifiable driving experience on light and heavy vehicles.
  • Valid, unendorsed Code 14 driver’s licence.
  • Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
  • Good driving record.
  • No history of drunken driving.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety rules and regulations.
  • Willingness to work shifts and sleep over on Robben Island.
