Job Purpose

The purpose of this role is to:

  • Assist the Train Driver in operating trains safely
  • Ensure cargo reaches destinations on time and in good condition
  • Support daily train operations and safety procedures

Key Responsibilities

As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will:

Train Preparation & Operations

  • Prepare locomotives before departure
  • Assist with brake tests and equipment checks
  • Attach and detach train vehicles
  • Complete pre-trip inspections

En-Route Support

  • Assist the Train Driver during operations
  • Monitor signals and train movement
  • Handle emergencies and protect the train when required
  • Ensure safe and efficient train movement

Shunting & Yard Duties

  • Perform shunting activities in sidings
  • Move and position wagons as per instructions
  • Update vehicle lists and work orders

Administration

  • Complete train journals and reports
  • Provide feedback on incidents and deviations
  • Perform general administrative duties

Minimum Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • Grade 12 with:
    • Mathematics and/or
    • Physical Science

Additional Requirements

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Minimum height: 1.6m
  • Physically and medically fit (hearing, vision, mental fitness)
  • Able to carry heavy objects
  • Willing to undergo medical and psychometric assessments

Training Requirements

  • Must complete theoretical and practical training
  • Obtain a Train Assistant Certificate
  • Undergo continuous safety and behavioural assessments
