Cleaner Job Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 10 or equivalent qualification.
  • Alternatively, an ABET Level 4 qualification.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • 0–2 years’ appropriate cleaning experience in a healthcare facility or similar environment will be an added advantage.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work productively.
  • Willingness to work shifts and under pressure.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Cleaner Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for maintaining a clean, hygienic and safe environment at the hospital.

Key duties include:

  • Cleaning designated areas such as windows, walls, basins, lockers, kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Sweeping, mopping and polishing floors and other designated areas.
  • Performing routine general cleaning and related services.
  • Opening windows daily to support hygiene and infection-control requirements.
  • Performing damp and dry dusting.
  • Emptying dustbins in designated areas.
  • Regularly assessing and updating toilet-cleaning checklists according to required hygiene standards.
  • Replacing toilet paper, towels and hand soap when required.
  • Removing and storing waste in designated areas.
  • Reporting safety hazards identified in the working environment.
  • Providing routine maintenance services.
  • Cleaning, maintaining and safeguarding cleaning equipment and materials.
  • Keeping cleaning equipment stores properly organised.
  • Reporting electrical or mechanical malfunctions involving cleaning machines and related equipment.
