This role reports directly to the SVM and Flightline Manager and is responsible for the safe movement of aircraft during ground operations.

Tug Driver Job Purpose

The Tug Driver will safely perform aircraft pushback and towing operations while ensuring full compliance with aviation safety regulations, airline procedures, and airport operating standards. The successful candidate will work closely with flight crews and ground personnel to support efficient aircraft movements and turnaround operations.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct aircraft pushback and towing operations according to approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Position aircraft safely during departures, arrivals, and maintenance movements.
  • Maintain communication with flight deck crews, marshallers, and ground staff.
  • Apply correct hand signals, headset communication, and emergency procedures.
  • Comply with all airport airside safety regulations and speed limits.
  • Perform daily inspections of aircraft tugs, tow bars, and ground support equipment.
  • Report equipment defects immediately.
  • Follow SACAA, airport authority, and FlySafair safety standards.
  • Identify and report hazards, incidents, and near misses through the Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Operate aircraft tugs and ground support vehicles safely.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles and towing equipment in good condition.
  • Complete operational documentation and equipment inspection records.
  • Support ramp operations during peak periods.
  • Assist with aircraft repositioning for maintenance, training, and operational requirements.
  • Work closely with ground handling teams to ensure efficient aircraft turnaround.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants applying for Tug Driver must have:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in airside, ramp, or ground handling operations.
  • Experience with aircraft towing and pushback operations.
  • Experience working on airport aprons and aircraft ground movements.
  • Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
  • Valid AAFSA Tug Licence.
  • Previous ASCA Permit.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Successful candidates should demonstrate:

  • Advanced knowledge of aircraft towing and pushback procedures.
  • Strong understanding of aircraft weight, balance, and manoeuvring principles.
  • Knowledge of airport layouts and airside safety regulations.
  • Experience using aircraft tugs and ground support equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent time management skills.
