Requirements for Gauteng Examination Assistant Jobs

Applicants must have an appropriate recognised academic qualification, such as:

  • Senior Certificate
  • National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • National Senior Certificate Vocational

Because examination administration operates under strict deadlines, candidates must be able to work accurately and effectively under pressure.

Examination Assistant Duties

Successful Examination Assistants may be responsible for:

  • Receiving, checking and controlling examination scripts.
  • Scanning and packing scripts for marking.
  • Archiving scripts after marking.
  • Checking the correct number of scripts and mark sheets in each batch.
  • Checking scripts according to subject, paper and examination session.
  • Identifying and resolving discrepancies.
  • Ensuring examination bags contain the required flow-control lists.
  • Ensuring bags are correctly labelled for the appropriate marking venue.
  • Creating marking centre files for scripts being dispatched.
  • Assisting with the dispatch of scripts to marking centres.
  • Receiving, controlling and archiving marked scripts at Head Office.
  • Maintaining accurate examination records.

Quality Assurer Duties

Quality Assurers will assist with the control and quality checking of examination scripts during the marking process.

Duties include:

  • Receiving, controlling and distributing scripts to marking teams.
  • Checking the correct number of scripts and mark sheets.
  • Assisting with the control, distribution and scanning of scripts.
  • Checking that all examination questions have been marked.
  • Checking that marks have been added correctly.
  • Ensuring marks are correctly transferred to the front cover of scripts.
  • Checking that script totals are accurate.
  • Verifying that totals are correctly transferred to mark sheets.
  • Identifying discrepancies and ensuring corrections are made.
  • Reconciling the number of scripts after marking.
  • Arranging scripts by subject, paper and number for indexed archival.

Important Eligibility Rules

The Gauteng Department of Education has specifically stated that the following people may not apply:

  • Persons writing National Senior Certificate examinations in 2026.
  • Persons writing Senior Certificate examinations in 2026.
  • Persons writing AET examinations in 2026.
  • Persons who have taken the VSP.
  • Persons who are currently employed elsewhere.
