About the SAA Technical Apprenticeship / Learnership Programme 2026

The SAA Technical Apprenticeship / Learnership Programme 2026 provides structured training in approved aviation technical trades. Successful applicants will be placed in one of SAAT’s specialist trade areas, where they will receive:

  • Formal theoretical instruction
  • Supervised practical workplace training
  • Exposure to real aircraft maintenance environments
  • Training aligned with industry and regulatory standards

This programme is ideal for candidates who are technically inclined and interested in long-term careers within the aviation maintenance sector.

Trades Offered (Choose Two in Order of Preference)

Applicants may select two trades when applying.

Aircraft Welding

Training includes:

  • Welding and repair of aircraft and engine components
  • Plasma spraying techniques
  • Heat treatment processes
  • Manufacturing of aircraft parts and tooling

Aircraft Spray Painting

Training includes:

  • Corrosion prevention techniques
  • Repairing and restoring paint coatings
  • Application of protective coatings
  • Painting aircraft interiors and exteriors

Aircraft Trimming

Training includes:

  • Manufacturing and repairing aircraft interiors
  • Inspection and maintenance of cabin components
  • Maintenance of aircraft survival equipment

Aircraft Composite Structures

Training includes:

  • Manufacturing aircraft composite components
  • Repair and inspection of composite structures
  • Maintenance of advanced aircraft materials

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements:

Option 1: Grade 12 (Matric)

  • Pure Mathematics: 50% or Level 4
  • Physical Science: 50% or Level 4
  • English: Pass required

Option 2: N3 Certificate

  • Mathematics: 50% pass
  • Engineering Science: 50% pass

Knowledge and Skills Requirements

Applicants should demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English (essential)
  • Basic understanding of technical or mechanical concepts (advantageous)
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
