Theoretical content will make up around 30% of the program. This academic training will be provided at a DCS institution that has been accredited, as determined by the Department. In-depth education in self-defense, weaponry and physical training are all part of the theoretical training.
Since this training is required, you must commit to a full-time schedule at the Training College. During the training time, successful candidates are provided with free lodging, food, a uniform (field wear and a tracksuit), and all instructional materials.
70% of the remaining training will consist of actual workplace (on-the-job) training in the Correctional and Social Reintegration Centres/Units.This section of the course will involve responsibilities related to the rehabilitation and security of criminals. During this phase of training, participants continue to receive a monthly stipend but are responsible for their own housing, food, and transportation.
During a learnership, the Department of Correctional Services does not provide a housing allowance, housing subsidy, retirement fund, medical assistance, danger allowance, or overtime.Once the learner has successfully completed both the theoretical (instructional) and practical (workplace) stages, submitted a final Portfolio of Evidence (POE), and passed external verification by SASSETA, a NQF 4 FET Certificate in Correctional Services will be granted.
