Semi-Skilled Environmental Job Overview
The South African National Parks (SANParks) is inviting applications for 22 Semi-Skilled Environmental Monitor positions under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). These opportunities are available within the Biodiversity Social Projects Environmental Monitor Programme in the Nxanatseni Region of Kruger National Park.
This programme offers unemployed South African youth and community members an opportunity to gain valuable environmental conservation experience while contributing to the protection and maintenance of one of South Africa’s most important conservation areas.
Position Details (Semi-Skilled Environmental)
- Position: Semi-Skilled Environmental Monitor (22 Posts)

- Contract Duration: Fixed-term contract until 31 March 2027

Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Matric / Grade 12 / NCV Level 4 qualification
- At least 1 year of experience in environmental monitoring activities
- Ability to communicate effectively in English and one additional local language
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in information recording and report writing
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and after-hours duties
- Must be physically fit and in good health
- No criminal record
- Ability to work weekends, public holidays, and occasional overtime
- Must provide a valid Police Clearance Certificate or proof of application
- Successful candidates must pass a medical fitness assessment conducted by a medical practitioner
Key Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be responsible for supporting environmental conservation and monitoring activities within Kruger National Park.
Environmental Monitoring Duties
- Monitor protected area functions, area integrity, and wildlife security
- Identify and report problem animals damaging park fences
- Report domestic animals found inside the park
- Conduct waste removal activities along fence lines
- Perform daily fence monitoring and maintenance
- Report damaged fencing within camps and protected areas
Conservation Support
- Participate in community and environmental awareness programmes
- Assist with conservation-related activities when required
- Support wildlife and environmental protection initiatives
- Report suspected poaching activities to local Section Rangers
Camp and Patrol Duties
- Conduct camp patrols
- Assist with general cleaning duties
- Monitor park infrastructure and report issues
- Ensure compliance with environmental management standards
