Purpose of the Job (General Worker Grade 1)

The General Worker Grade 1 provides hands-on support with logistics, equipment preparation, safe loading and unloading of chemicals and products, and various housekeeping duties within the Research & Technology environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safety Compliance

• Correct identification and use of PPE
• Participate in emergency preparedness exercises
• Conduct routine inspections on safety equipment
• Perform BAPP observations where applicable
• Adhere to IMS procedures, safety policies and operational standards
• Maintain strict compliance with SHE requirements

2. Housekeeping Duties

• Clean plant areas, benches, floors, PPE, and glassware (routine & instructed)
• Pack and store materials safely following instruction and planned routines
• Handle chemicals, dangerous goods, and gas cylinders safely
• Load and offload vehicles as required
• Maintain neatness in all allocated work areas
• Perform tasks under direct supervision and according to daily plans

3. General Support Tasks

• Assist a dedicated technician or skilled worker with discipline-specific activities
• Deliver messages, parcels, and documents as required
• Work overtime when requested
• Operate hand tools and general equipment safely
• Handle process chemicals and glassware responsibly
• Perform ad-hoc tasks assigned by senior personnel

Minimum Requirements

Formal Education

• Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science
• EC1 Driving Licence (essential)
• Forklift Licence (advantageous)

Experience

• Minimum 1 year relevant working experience
