EPWP Programme employment opportunities are now open for 55x Skilled Environmental Monitors at Golden Gate Highlands National Park. This is a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2026 with a daily wage rate of R311,00 in line with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) rates.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the EPWP Skilled Environmental Monitors (Conservation) role, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification (Standard 10).
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and after hours.
  • Physically fit and able to conduct extended patrols in mountainous and challenging terrain.
  • Must undergo a medical fitness examination by a certified medical practitioner.
  • No criminal record – valid SAPS Clearance Certificate is required.
  • A valid driver’s license will be an added advantage.
  • Firearm competency in Self-Loading Rifles, Manually Operated Rifles, and 9mm Pistols is a strong advantage.
  • Must have own reliable transport and accommodation (no staff housing provided).
  • Willing to undergo a fitness assessment during the recruitment process.

Key Responsibilities for EPWP Skilled Environmental Monitors

The successful candidates will perform the following duties:

  • Conduct law enforcement patrols, monitoring, anti-poaching, and problem animal control (on foot, horseback, or vehicle).
  • Assist with infrastructure maintenance (fencing, trails, erosion control, roads, and rehabilitation systems).
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents and sightings.
  • Support conservation activities, including clearing invasive alien species.
  • Assist with fire management – wildfire suppression, firebreaks, and prescribed burns.
  • Complete and maintain vehicle logbooks.
  • Report to Corporals / Section Ranger.
  • Assist with horse riding stable activities when required.
