Purpose of the Apprenticeship

The Transnet Boilermaker Apprenticeship prepares learners to work independently and efficiently as qualified artisans. During the programme, apprentices will be trained to:

  • Plan and prepare trade-related tasks
  • Manufacture, assemble and repair components
  • Inspect and commission installations
  • Use boilermaker tools, machinery and workshop equipment
  • Apply engineering knowledge in real industrial environments

Key Outputs

By the end of the programme, learners will be able to:

  • Prepare work areas, materials, consumables and tools
  • Use hand tools, power tools and precision measuring equipment
  • Assemble, fit and install structural components
  • Test, inspect, commission and maintain installations
  • Repair mechanical and metalwork components
  • Apply engineering processes safely and efficiently

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the qualification routes below:

N2 Subjects

  • Mathematics (Pure)
  • Engineering Science
  • Plating & Structural Drawing
  • Engineering Drawing (Draughting)
  • Metal Worker’s Theory
  • Plater’s Theory

OR N3–N6 Subjects

  • Mathematics (Pure)
  • Engineering Science
  • Plating & Structural Drawing
  • Engineering Drawing (Draughting)
  • Mechanotechnology

OR NCV Level 4

Fundamentals:

  • English (FAL)
  • Mathematics (Pure)
  • Life Orientation

Vocational Subjects:

  • Engineering Process
  • Professional Engineering Practice
  • Applied Engineering Technology
  • Welding

OR Technical Grade 12

  • Mechanical Technology (Welding/Metalwork)
