Learnership Purpose EARNERSHIP PURPOSE
The purpose of the Animal Health Technician Learnership is to provide structured workplace training and professional development for qualified AHTs, with extensive exposure to canine physical rehabilitation, hospital care, and veterinary support services.
Learners will gain critical emerging skills that enhance employability both locally and internationally.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this Animal Health Technician Learnership, applicants must meet the following legal and professional requirements:
- Diploma in Animal Health Technician or BSc Vet Technology
- Registered or in the process of registering with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC)
- Eligible to participate in the YES4YOUTH programme
- Willingness to work day and night shifts (shift work is mandatory)
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Physically and mentally fit
- Own accommodation
No other qualifications will be considered.
Roles and Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Welcome clients and patients on arrival
- Notify veterinarians and physiotherapists of patient arrivals
- Provide regular feedback to clients
- Send daily photos and videos of patient treatments
Teamwork
- Communicate effectively with the veterinary team
- Ensure adequate stock of essential supplies
- Assist colleagues for optimal patient and client outcomes
- Maintain clean, organised workspaces and update patient boards
Administration
- Answer telephone calls and manage emails
- Capture patient bookings and manage calendars (Amelia system)
- Upload and manage patient records using SHARC
- Communicate with external veterinary practices
- Invoice clients and process payments using SAGE
- Perform filing, onboarding, statements, and debt follow-ups
Hospital & Veterinary Support
- Assist veterinarians and physiotherapists during consultations
- Monitor boarding patients and perform regular vital checks (TPR)
- Administer medication as prescribed
- Feed patients, including syringe feeding where required
- Prepare patients for surgery and monitor post-operative recovery
- Collect samples and maintain sterile surgical environments
- Clean consulting rooms and boarding kennels
Physical Rehabilitation
- Perform prescribed rehabilitation exercises
- Administer treatments including hydrotherapy, e-stim, PROM, and therapeutic exercise
- Assist with controlled patient walks as prescribed
Formal Learning and Training
Learners will receive access to Dr Tanya Grantham’s SAVC-accredited Canine Physical Rehabilitation Course, which offers:
- 62 CPD points (SAVC accredited)
- 16 in-depth theoretical modules
- 7 focused practical training sessions
- Ongoing supervision by veterinarians and veterinary physiotherapists
