POSITION PURPOSE

The Trainee Train Assistant aids the Train Driver in safely and efficiently operating trains, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy-haul, and passenger systems, ensuring timely and secure delivery of freight and cargo.

  • Department: Diesel Team A (OP-COR-EXEC-TCM-EMR)

  • Reports To: Section Manager, Train Traffic
  • Grade: SSTFT
  • Operating Division: Transnet Freight Rail

Position Outputs

Duty Allocation and Preparation:

  • Report for duty at the assigned workplace.
  • Identify the locomotive for operation.
  • Equip and prepare the locomotive with necessary tools.
  • Clean and inspect the work area and equipment.
  • Assist with locomotive start-up, brake tests, coupling, and dispatch.

Locomotive Preparation:

  • Prepare locomotives according to requirements.
  • Inspect, clean, and supplement equipment.
  • Support start-up procedures and brake testing.

Communication Equipment:

  • Obtain and verify radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, and telemeters.
  • Ensure all communication devices are functional.

Pre-Trip Preparation:

  • Conduct pre-trip inspections of locomotives and trains.
  • Attach or detach vehicles as required.
  • Complete documentation and perform brake tests with the driver.

Shunting Activities:

  • Execute shunting tasks per work orders.
  • Place and clear trucks at sidings.
  • Maintain and update vehicle lists.

Enroute Assistance:

  • Ensure safe train movement and communicate with the driver.
  • Patrol locomotives, reset trip-outs, and handle incidents or emergencies.

Safety Compliance:

  • Follow safety protocols and provide accurate feedback to the train driver.

Administrative Duties:

  • Complete administrative tasks and submit the Train Journal after each shift.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Educational Requirement: Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
  • Other Requirements:
  • Periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments.
  • Physical hearing, vision, mental fitness.
  • Minimum age of 21 years for train driver or control duties.
  • Minimum height of 1.6m.
  • Psychomotor ability assessed through Vienna Testing System (VTS).
  • Ability to carry heavy objects.

Functional Training:

  • Completion of theoretical and practical Train Assistant duties.
  • Certification to work independently as a Train Assistant.

Competencies

Knowledge:

  • Various communication systems.
  • Depot layout and locomotive classes.
  • Train working rules and safety standards.
  • Health and Safety Act, BCEA, and SANS 3004.

Skills:

  • Locomotive preparation, coupling, and stabling.
  • Train handling and shunting movements.
